On Wednesday 3rd December 2008, twenty five independent voluntary groups of people set up Christmas Tree displays in Fareham Methodist Church. Each group was supporting a different charity and hoping to win the first prize of £50 to be donated to their nominated charity. A great deal of ingenuity was shown in the decoration of the trees which were displayed. Most decorations were hand-made and there were various themes. The nativity featured in many and there were a whole host of others from dogs and birds to hand crafted Bavarian wooden and crocheted decorations. On one tree all the decorations were edible!
For the next three days over 400 people visited the church to view the trees and cast votes for their favourites. On Saturday afternoon the Mayor of Fareham - Counsellor Ernest Crouch and his wife Enid viewed the trees, led the carol singing and presented the prizes for the best Christmas Trees. Solent Women's Institute and Holbrook Women's Institute were Runners-up, winning £12.50 and £25 for their respective charities. The Groom family tree - the "Yummy-Scrummy Christmas Tree" won £50 for their nominated charity Cancer Research UK.
